Children will listen

I found these lyrics over at Felecia's Blog. It just really hit home for me. It reminded me of how we are called to be an example to those around us, especially children. God sends us into the world to be lights, and as you can tell from the title of my blog, I believe that it means literally. We need to go into the world and show others the way to salvation. Children are very easily impressed and any actions we take or things that we say are going to leave a mark. Whether it is good or bad is your choice and responsibility.
Jesus says in Matthew 18 verse 6 that whoever causes one of these little ones to stumble it would be better for him to have a millstone hung about his neck and be flung into the sea. I don't know about you, but this makes me think that God is really serious about how we act.
So, now I will leave you to peruse this. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!

CHILDREN WILL LISTEN

How do you say to your child in the night?
Nothing's all black, but then nothing's all white
How do you say it will all be all right
When you know that it might not be true?
What do you do?

Careful the things you say
Children will listen
Careful the things you do
Children will see and learn
Children may not obey, but children will listen
Children will look to you for which way to turn
To learn what to be
Careful before you say "Listen to me"
Children will listen

Careful the wish you make
Wishes are children
Careful the path they take
Wishes come true, not free
Careful the spell you cast
Not just on children
Sometimes the spell may last
Past what you can see
And turn against you
Careful the tale you tell
That is the spell
Children will listen

How can you say to a child who's in flight
"Don't slip away and I won't hold so tight"
What can you say that no matter how slight Won't be misunderstood
What do you leave to your child when you're dead?
Only whatever you put in it's head
Things that you're mother and father had said
Which were left to them too
Careful what you say
Children will listen
Careful you do it too
Children will see
And learn, oh guide them that step away
Children will glisten
Tample with what is true
And children will turn
If just to be free
Careful before you say
"Listen to me"

Children will listen .... children will listen .... children will listen!

Just the normal plus a little bit of the extraordinary!

I can't believe that this week has gone by so quickly! I keep promising myself that I will keep up with writing on my blog, but somehow or other I am always putting it off.
My French class went very well. We should be getting the results of our tests in next week *sends a prayer heavenward*. I think that I did alright, but I would rather that I did "excellent" or at the very least "good". I am kind of like that!

Right now we are studying, among other things, the pronoun "y" that is used to substitute places and things. I thought that Spanish was complicated!! Why don't we all just speak one language (I know, I know, we had our chance over 4 thousand years ago and it didn't work out then either). Still, for all of my complaints I really enjoy my classes and I love the challenge they present to me!

Saturday in the evening was youth group. There was a secular concert going on in the community basketball/soccer court so not many youth showed up, but we still had a nice study with those who did. Please continue in prayer for this ministry, there is a lot of spiritual warfare going on for the lives of the youth of Boca del Rio and it will take our prayers to win.

On Sunday we went to church and received some wonderful encouragement (at least I did) from a passage in Matthew 19. The pastor shared about how we, as Christians, need to examine our motives; we need to come before God with pure motives, free from any pride or disobedience. It truly hit home for me and I think it will be awhile before I can think about it less than incessantly.

Yesterday was also my brothers' birthday (the twins). They turned 13 *shakes head in wonder*. I don't know where the years have gone! The pastor called them up after the service so that we could pray for them and to sing them the birthday song, Mexican style! We also have this song that we play in our church called "the song of the little old lady" (closest translation) at the start of which you are supposed to get up and "dance like the little old lady". It's something that we always use when we have a party at the church and, from time to time, as a birthday make-a-fool-of-yourself song. Well anyway, they played it and Seth danced like a madman while Jessee just stood there looking embarrassed. Everyone laughed and Caleb turned to me and said, looking at the twins, "sometime the fool makes the wise man look foolish!" I can't help but love Mexico, and my brothers, of course!!!

For the twins' party Mom tried her hand at making an ice cream cake, it actually turned out as a very successful experiment and I don't think that anyone refused to eat it! Other than that we pretty much just hung out and enjoyed each other's company!

As far as anything else goes I have pretty much been sticking to my "daily duties". I play my guitar a lot (trying to figure out some new strum patterns) and I am trying to be a blessing at home. I don't know exactly why, but it always seems that it is the hardest to follow God and to obey and to be self-sacrificing at home. It is such a struggle for me, but God is faithful and will not allow me to be tempted beyond what I am able! I know that this is a battle I can and must win, to God be the glory!

Now for the extraordinary! I am going to share a verse (well, a series of verses) that I love. They are in Matthew 20, starting in verse 1 and going through verse 16. [notes I have made are in red and progressions of time are in italics]

1"For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner [God] who went out early in the
morning to hire laborers [Christians] for his vineyard [the world].
2"When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard.
3"And he went out about the third hour and saw others standing idle in the market place;
4and to those he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' And so they went.
5"Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did the same thing.
6"And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, 'Why have you been standing here idle all day long?'
7"They said to him, 'Because no one hired us.' He said to them, 'You go into the vineyard too.'
8"When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last group to the first.'
9"When those hired about the eleventh hour came, each one received a denarius.
10"When those hired first came, they thought that they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius.
11"When they received it, they grumbled at the landowner,
12saying, 'These last men have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.' [Persecutions]
13"But he answered and said to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius?
14'Take what is yours and go, but I wish to give to this last man the same as to you.
15'Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with what is my own? Or is your eye envious because I am generous?'
16"So the last shall be first, and the first last."

I know that there are many different views that can be taken on this parable and I also know that since it was a parable Jesus left a lot for us to interpret. Yet, I would like to share a little bit of the insight I have received. I highlighted the words that I thought were important to be taken note of.

I think that this passage, among other things, is giving us encouragement. It is telling us that God doesn't judge by how much we work or how wise we are. He judges our hearts and our willingness to serve Him. Just as the landowner in this parable, God has and still is calling us to go into the world as His laborers. And it doesn't say that it will be easy. In Romans 5:3 it tells us to rejoice in suffering because suffering produces patience and a proven character.

God puts you in the place where you are for a reason, and in this world no matter where you are you are more than likely to be persecuted, whether it be by friends or co-workers or maybe even a prison cell. Just like some of the laborers in this parable some of us as Christians will have to bear the "...scorching heat of the day..." and some of us won't, but we all are sent out with a mission to complete (Matthew 28:19-20).

In verse 16 it tells us that the last shall be first and the first last. Now, I don't know what that means exactly. Still, I think that it was referring to the Jews and the Gentiles, saying that even though the Jews were called first, God was going to call the Gentiles as well. Without being sure, however, I can only give this as a view.

So, in closing, I just want to sum up what I am trying to say. Mainly, that God will reward everyone according to his due, but that God is not accountable to any man. He gives where He wills and He takes where He wills. If we are truly followers of Christ we need to trust God enough to be able to say as Job says in Job 1:21 "...The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord." Life isn't easy. And living for Christ really isn't easy, but it is rewarding!

Thank you all for giving me an ear! I hope that the Lord richly blesses your day! Take the time to be a blessing to others!

Pictures at long last!

Alright, I have finally had the time to sit down and publish my post *pats self on back*. So, without taking up more of your time with an introduction, I will get to writing! Fasten your seatbeltes and prepare to be amazed!

AT THE SNOW!!!
This was the greatest of fun. After having spent two weeks travelling through Mexico, Arizona and California, we had finally arrived in the sunny state of Oregon! Well, maybe it wasn't sunny, but it was cold... very cold... in fact it snowed several times! Still, our snow-starved selves would not be satfisfied without an all out "trip to the snow", complete with hot chocolate, cold feet and snow-ball fights!
So, we got together with a homeschooling group and went! We rented the whole hill for the day and it was like having one huge party. I loved the fact that we didn't have to worry about straying away too far or any of the younger kids meeting with weirdos, we just relaxed and had fun!
(Go Mom and Dad!!!)(This is them sliding down the hill. Much to our disappointement, they didn't even fall off at the end! lol)

(This is Amanda, one of my good friends, who went with us. The motor home that she is getting into was actually ours. One of our friends in Sacramento let us use it for our trip to Oregon. I had never travelled in one before and I will tell you that it was heaven. It was so nice to be able to get up and walk around, and maybe even sleep! What a blessing, don't you think? We have decided that the only good way to go to the snow is in a motor home!)
(This is what I did after having played in the snow, eaten lunch and gotten totally soaked. I am kind of a whimp and heart and I really didn't want to go back out into the cold. Besides, I liked watching everyone else!)
(It snowed right before we left making it the perfect day!)
OTHER VISITS TO VARIOUS PLACES
(no comment!)(Noelle prepares a cake for Evie's birthday. She did a great job, I might add)
(We got to visit our home church and participate in the worship and service. It was especially nice to be able to see all of our friends again. It had been a long time!
During the service our family shared about what we had been doing Mexico. I say our family because all of us got up individually and shared. The boys shared about some experiences that they had had and Evie and my Mom shared a song for the kids. After them I got up and shared a passage from 1Timothy, tying it in with what I had seen God doing in the youth group.
After the service we all gathered in the fellowship hall for a potluck, Mexican -- err, well, American-Mexican -- style, and we got to eat the cake. Yumm!)
(I don't think that this needs explaining!)
(Caleb -- brother
Graham -- little version of Caleb
Carolina -- little sister of Graham, aka: sweetheart)
BREAKDOWN!!
Well, I suppose that you can't really have a true roadtrip without a mishap of some sort. This was that mishap!
We were on our way back down to Mexico and had just left Riverside, CA where we had stayed with my Grammy when it happened... oh, well I guess I should tell you what happened, huh.
This is our trailer tire. Now, there is something that you should know about this tire and this trailer. It is old. This is significant for more than one reason. Because it is old it is a little run down, but more than that the parts are also very hard to find. Having said as much it will not surprise you to find out that it took us no less than 9 hours to replace the disintegrated wheel bearing and get back on the road. I guess that we were blessed in serveral ways, even in this problem:
#1: It wasn't hot (big bonus).
#2: We had left ridiculously early in order to arrive on time, so we weren't as late a we could have been.
#3: We broke down right next to an exit, so we didn't have to call a tow truck.
#4: The town we broke down in had several part stores and shops.
#5: We had the money to fix the problem (that's a REALLY big bonus).
So, even though waiting in the car for 9+ hours wasn't fun (and especially not for my Dad who was doing all of the hard work) we were much better off than we could have been!
IN TUCSON ARIZONA
(Don't you love Jessee's throw. I don't know how he managed to win while throwing like that, but he did way better than I did. I hurt so bad the next day!)

(Caleb and Hunter)
(This is the house that we stayed at for three days before we crossed the border into Mexico. My Dad is busily packing so that we could get out of the house at 3am the next morning.)
CROSSING INTO MEXICO

(the border into Meixco. This is where you take care of all of your paperwork and get your visas.)(HaHaHa, This is how you move in Mexico. If you'll notice, this truck is also pulling the car behind it.)
(Venus right next to the Moon. Supposedly this only happens once in a lifetime. I thought that it was pretty spectacular, but I bet that it would be even cooler up close.)
(Unpacking and unpacking and unpacking)
(I finally got a new *coughs* wall. This time it's a tarp! You might think that I am weird to think of that as cool, but if you had seen my wall before then you would realize how nice this new one is. The old on was made of cloth and it collected dust really bad.)
(Here is the family that stayed in the house while we were gone. Their blog is Babymakers if you want to go over and read about how their trip went)
In closing, I would like to give the glory where it is due!
PRAYERS & PRAISES!!!
  • God provided the finances for us to be able to make it all the way to Oregon.
  • God provided a guitar for our pastor
  • God has used this trip to draw our family closer together.
  • Praise to God for His mercy and the grace He gave us in our travels.
  • Praise God that we were not lacking of anything throughout the entire time we were in the States.
  • Praise God for all of the people that He has used to bless us. I love seeing how God moves in peoples hearts!
  • Praise God that He provided the money to put a new roof on our van (the old one was rusted through).
  • God allowed me to meet with serveral new friends and a great many old friends (I love you guys!!).
  • God provided an air hockey table and a pool table for the youth center that we are building behind our house.
  • Prayer that God would continue to work in the youth in our village.
  • Prayer toward the mission teams we are planning on receiving this June. As the time gets closer things can get kind of hectic.
  • Prayer toward the outreaches that we are going to be doing over spring break (semana santa).
  • Prayer that God would give me direction as I decide what to do in this next year.

Blessings to you all! Have a wonderful day and a blessed week!

Just plain tuckered out!

Hey everyone!! I am finally back from my trip!
I can't believe how long it's been since I have written. Sorry, it really couldn't be helped. I have tried to find places that had computers in order to be able to update my blog and write to my friends, but it always worked out so that any time that I actually had free time I didn't have a computer and visa-versa. So, it might be a little bit before I can get myself enough recovered from the hecticness of our journey to actually tell you how it went. Right now am a just WAY too wiped to even think about summing up or telling you how it went!
So, give me a day and I will try and get on here with pictures and some info!
Blessings to all of my faithful friends and readers (and reader-friends :P) and may the Lord guide you in all that you do!

Pro-life Action Alert: get involved

Dear friends,
I have recently been involved in an effort called "Cry Action". We are now working on a way to get the attention of the government. This is an idea that the group came up with. If you can participate then please do. It's a worthy cause and a way to get the message out to the world. Take some time, you won't regret it!
Here is the letter that was sent out to the group members:

Hey everyone! I thought this sounded like a great idea -- it's simple, it's
inexpensive, it's easy. The idea is to send a pro-life valentine to President
Barack Obama. The original challenge was to send one or two, but I'm going to
encourage you all to "Do Hard Things" and each send ten -- and then to spread
the word and ask everyone you know to do the same. Between the people on
this email list alone, without spreading the word, that would equal more than
2,300 envelopes sent! The goal is that Obama would receive 50 million to
represent the 50 million lives lost in legal abortions since Roe v. Wade was
passed. Here are the instructions: Purchase some red envelopes at an office
supply or party supply store -- or make some out of red construction paper. On
the front, address the envelope to: President Barack Obama The White House 1600
Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC 20500 Don't put anything inside, seal it, and
on the back of it write the following message:

"This envelope represents one child who died in abortion. It is empty because that life was unable to offer anything to the world. Responsibility begins with conception." Put a stamp on it and mail it!

Ideas for spreading the word:
* Post this in a Facebook note and tag people.
* Send this out in an email blast to your friends.
* Invite people over and make some valentines together.

On the road AGAIN!!!

If I had one word that would describe this past week it would be... hmm... let's see... crazy? ... inconsistant? ... insane? Yep, that's it. Insane!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't even quite catch up with what has happened. Honestly, I think that today all of the late nights and early mornings caught up with me. I feel like I stayed up all night. I am going to bed as early as possible tonight (that means sometime before ten. Somehow I can never manage anything earlier, and it isn't because of me).
So, with this in mind, you must excuse me if this sounds hurried or thrown-together, because it is! ( :P )

These past two weeks have been interesting. I haven't been in the States so long and I always forget what life here is like. I am so unused to the fast-paced way of life that even a "normal" day seems to tax my energy and forbearance. Life in Mexico is so relaxed... I can't help but miss it; still, I love being able to see all of my friends!

Speaking of seeing friends, I had a particular treat while I was in CA. I got to see my blogger friends Nastya and Felecia. I really enjoyed meeting them and I praise God that in person they were everything and more than they were online (you know, sometimes people seem a lot different online than they truly are in person)! Thanks so much guys!

On Thursday we arrived in Chico at my Grandparents' house. (Just as a side note: one of our friends in Sacramento let us use their motorhome for our trip North. Sweet!!!) My parents stayed in the camper and the rest of us spread out around the house. As a special, I even got to sleep in a real bed!
We did many things with my Grammy. We went shopping (at the thrift store, of course. No use wasting money getting something at an actual store when you can get something almost new and never worn for half the price!), rented several movies (among those the movie Fireproof, which I LOVED and recomened for anyone looking for a good movie to watch, though not really for little kids), played cards (Killer Bunnies, YES!!!), went to the library (my newest book to recomend is Darcy's story. It's Pride and Prejudice from a whole new perspective) and just hung out.
On Wednesday we went to Calvalry Chapel Chico and I got to see all of my friends there for the first time in... wow... almost 2 years! I think that they were pretty surprised since I hadn't given them any advanced warning. :D

We did quite a few other things while in Chico, but for the sake of time I won't mention any more. Today we departed and are now in Oregon. God blessed up immensely in our traveling. We had a peaceful, fun and uneventful trip (the best kind, I think). My Grandma got a ride up with us so she could go and help my Aunt in Portland (she broke her ankle very badly in a skiiing accident about a month ago, and she is struggling with a lot of pain. Pray for her if you think about it, thanks!). I enjoyed being able to spend time with her without anything going on (I admit that it was a crazy week).
The scenery was beautiful! I was so excited by all the snow. You'd've thought we'd seen some sort of wonder by the exclamations and ejaculations in the car (*ahem* motor home)!

So, we are in Oregon at long last! I am excited by the things we have planned for the week, but I know that the most important thing is that I keep God first. I find that sometimes, in all of the stress and busyness of the trip, God gets pushed to the back. I know that this is not how it should be and am determined to KEEP HIM FIRST, and let the rest follow. I have learned from experience that when I don't prayer or spend time in the Word I become cranky and short-tempered, not to mention don't have peace in my own life. Through God's strength I shall be faithful! Though I am weak, in Him I am strong!

My Verse of the week:
James 2:18
But someone will say, "You have faith; I have
deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.

As a note: I am planning on getting on here and writing a "thinker-post" very soon. Just bear with me a little longer!
Blessings!!!
